Agardhiella tenera was collected in Shinnecock Bay utilizing an otter trawl. All other algal samples were collected from the inter-tidal zone off Montauk Point. The species collected included Ahnfeltia plicata, Chondrus crispus, Corallina officinalis, Cystoclonium purpureum var. cirrhosum, Gracilaria folüfera, Palmaria palmata (formerly Rhodymenia palmata). The alternative view is to regard the type of the genus as being tied to the epithet used, viz., tenera, making it necessary to place Agardhiella into the synonymy of Solieria, since Gigartina tenera has been shown to be a species of Solieria (Wynne & Taylor, 1973).
